St Peter's Organ

The 2010 MPOS/Rodgers Organ

The organ installed (Christmas 2010) at St Peter’s is unique in the UK.  It is the first organ to seamlessly combine pipe and digital technology alongside one another in an instrument of this size.  The organ is situated in the North-East corner of the church, with the Great organ speaking into the Nave from behind the historic eighteenth century case, the Choir organ speaking from a newly constructed case on the chancel balcony, and the Swell and Pedal divisions speaking from within the resonance of the organ chamber.  The organ is a not only a magnificent recital instrument, but also able to provide a firm support for congregational singing and colourful accompaniments for choral music. The organ can be heard every Sunday of the year, morning and evening.

Why a ‘combination’ organ?

In September 2003, the National Conference of Diocesan Organ Advisors was held in Nottingham. The delegates had spent an afternoon at St Peter’s listening to the organ, looking at it, and discussing ways that the instrument might be improved or replaced. They were unanimously of the opinion that it is impossible for a pipe organ of the size of the instrument needed for a church of the size of St Peter’s to occupy the organ chamber and be properly audible around the whole church. The suggestions they offered as to how to solve the problem involved either housing the entire organ in the West gallery (which would involve obscuring the west window, and make choir accompaniment nigh on impossible) or extending the organ chamber beyond the arch into the north aisle which would, of course, require substantial and profound changes to the fabric of the Grade I listed building. Under the guidance of Paul Hale, the Diocesan Organ Advisor, it was suggested that consideration be given to a new and exciting type of instrument that was gaining great success in America and Asia, but yet to ‘take off’ in the UK – that of the ‘combination’ organ, that is, an instrument that combines traditional pipework with state-of-the-art digital synthesis technologies, all designed and voiced together as a single instrument. It was felt that this type of instrument would enable a much greater flexibility in how the organ was arranged in the chamber, and accordingly offer a solution to the space problem outlined above. After consideration of all the options (i.e., replacement of the solid state system in the existing organ, renovation of the existing organ, purchase and ‘transplant’ of a pipe organ from elsewhere, purchase of a new digital organ, purchase of a new pipe organ, purchase of a new hybrid pipe/digital organ), it was agreed by the Parochial Church Council, the Director of Music, Dr Peter Siepmann, and the Diocesan Organ Advisor, Paul Hale, that this ‘hybrid’ solution was the best option for the musical requirements of the church. A report was commissioned from Rodgers UK Ltd in collaboration with Modular Pipe Organ Systems Ltd, who are the world leaders in this field by quite some distance, having installed instruments at such prestigious venues as Hong Kong and Singapore cathedrals, as well as, temporarily, here in the UK at Worcester Cathedral. A contract was subsequently awarded and signed on 5th March 2010.
